In Oregon self-serve is illegal. Every time someone in the state legislature introduces a bill to make it legal, people start howling about gas attendants losing their jobs, senior citizens being forced out of their cars in the rain to handle dirty unwieldy gas nozzles, and my favorite, that things will blow up if untrained ameteurs are allowed anywhere near a gas pump. Commercial vehicles are allowed to use self-serve at special "cardlock" gas stations. The full-serve islands were always deserted. I notice the gas stations in OR and NJ aren't particularly higher-priced than the neighboring states, despite having to hire people to pump the gas. Here, there was always about a 20¢ per gallon difference between full and self, "to pay the employee to pump it for you."
