It's the asshole directors who are behind this nonsense. Nearly every Michael Bay movie has one of those silly circle pan shots. That's Bay calling it, not the DP of the month. Tony Scott had a circle pan of the top of a building shot from a helicopter in Spy Game. He had the aerial circle pan intercut with closeups of Brad Pitt and Robert Redford arguing. He probably had big sketchpad story boards with a shit load of swoosh marks all over the stick figures. CIRCLE PAN THIS PART, BITCH! Do it from the SKY!!! Aaarrggh! While we're at it, "shaky cam" in the Bourne movies? I really should have said circle-dolly rather than circle-pan. Yeah, it's way overused! (Whatever it's called.) It's like what happens when somebody is just learning how to edit video with "Movie Maker" or "iMovie." You'll see them use every transition in the book when they aren't necessary. You try to tell them to either use a simple cross dissolve or even just cut to the next shot but they insist on putting in every "ripple," "slide," "cube spin" and "page peel" effect they can get their hands on until the video looks like a damn circus! The same thing happens when you are trying to teach people to shoot video and they keep zooming in and out all the time. You have to, pretty much, slap them upside the head and yell at them to keep their damn fingers off the zoom button! I have a rule when I teach kids to make videos. They are only allowed to use an effect ONE TIME. If they want a zoom shot, they are allowed to zoom in or zoom out and that's it. If they want a ripple transition at the beginning or end of a scene, they are allowed to do it once and that's it. I think there should be the same rule for the circle shot. (or carousel shot or whatever it's really called.) If he wants to use it, he's allowed to do it ONCE. But whoever is responsible should definitely be kicked in the nuts just for considering it. I think the concept behind it is that it shows a 360 view. You don't see the director, crew and equipment anywhere, therefore completely immersing you into the film's "world". I have the opposite reaction when I see the circle-dolly carousel thing. It makes me think about what kind of Technocrane might have been rented or what kind of custom set may have been built all just to get the circular dollying shot. Normally, you think of a camera angle as a sort of natural point of view into the story (character's POV, third person POV) or conventional establishing/covering shots that don't draw attention to themselves. The carousel shot doesn't fit that at all. If it was a character's POV it would be that of a spastic idiot roller skating circles around the other guys in the scene. "Adeste Fidelis" Sung in Latin by a huge choir. Accompanied by a monstrous pipe organ that plays so loud it makes you pee your pants when you hear it. And, of course, it would be impossible to faithfully record. You would have to attend a live performance. . "Linus and Lucy" Played by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. But, since Vince Guaraldi is dead, you would have to listen to this on recording. Other than that, all songs are crap, not Christmas. Okay, Maybe I'd give in to "Veni, veni, Emmanuel" but only if sung by choir, unaccompanied, in Latin and arranged in its original antiphonal harmony. Even I can't stand "The First Noel," more than a few times, and that is a song which my Mom said they sang especially for me on my birthday, given that I was born on the 25th of December and gave me the middle name of Noel (and yes, it's pronounced "noel" not "knoll"). I believed they did all those decorations for me too until I was about 6 yro.
