I ran many mag track 35s where the surround track was essentially dead or had very little activity.

Well track 4 was actually referred to as effects track originally

Never heard of this movie.

One of the late Toronto 70MM film releases.

Had no idea that Born on the 4th had a 70MM release

One of the very rare times when both screens in one theatre were both playing 70MM of the same film. Look at the Sheraton.

June 23, 1989

Sept 2nd, 1989

July 1989, a total of 17 70MM prints in circulation by Famous Players alone in the Toronto area .

This type of practice was not as rare as you may think. Maybe in Toronto it was, but I can think of numerous instances in California where two and even three 70mm prints were booked in the same theater. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), for instance, played on all three screens of Mann's Chinese for its first two weeks. Superman II (1981) and Willow (1988) played on two screens there. The Right Stuff opened on both screens of the Century Plaza. And Syufy (AKA Century Theatres) frequently booked two 70mm prints of the same title for their Century Dome complexes in San Jose, Orange and Sacramento. There are other examples, but I think you get the point.

Toronto is a sensational film town and generally regarded as North America's #3 market. In contrast, each of the #1 & 2 markets (New York and Los Angeles), for that same time frame and same group of films, saw over fifty 70mm prints circulate. Even more telling is this bit from a retrospective piece I put together for one of the 1989 releases:

One of the star treck films ran on two screens at the hollywood and two screens at the sheraton sharing one print that was bicycled on 20 min reels
Often the uptown as well had 70 playing upstairs and downstairs in #2 at the same time

Michael, I say rare because, it didn't really happen all the time.

Do you have the ad for Titanic in 70MM.. I would love to see that.

What movie is that, anyway? Looks like Paul Newman, in a movie called "Newman."

That ad was from the era where a star's name in big type would actually pull people in. That era's about gone, sadly.

That's because the 'stars' of today's movies are really not 'stars' and are not worthy of such headline treatment...nor do they have the pulling power the greats once had.

The picture quality of a 70mm blowup from 35mm is amazing since a lot of what is wrong on the screen is print related
The larger print frame of a 70mm print reduces grain size on the same picture size and allows far more even light to be put through the film

Gord-I mean some of the movies that got 70MM is interesting. Bette Midler fans likely could of cared less that Beaches was 70MM

As for odd 70mm titles, Three Men and a Baby had a 70mm release as well.
