There is a 70mm print of Titanic still in Toronto, apparently in good shape.

Those frames don't look like they're from a release print.

I saw OUTLAND at the Cinerama Theatre in Honolulu in 70mm and enjoyed it very much. As a futuristic version of HIGH NOON, it was very good and I enjoyed it very much. By the way, OUTLAND was released on DVD by Warner Home Video very shortly after the format was introduced and has the distinction of being one of the worst looking disc ever released. WHV never remastered it and the original DVD has long been out of print. THE BIBLE also looked dreadful on DVD but the recent Blu-Ray of the film is gorgeous. Hopefully Warner Home Video will do a full restoration of OUTLAND and release it in Blu-Ray sometime in the near future,

That is a very interesting question, Tom. Although I had stated OUTLAND was released on DVD with very poor picture quality, I am now not sure it ever was. There is a possibility it was a laserdisc of the movie I had seen that was not very good. Anyway, WHV only released it once on home video and it is now time to reissue OUTLAND with pristine picture and sound quality in Blu-Ray.

I wouldn't be so quick to discount the figure of six. I also am aware of only six first-run U.S. bookings.

That number came from the local Paramount rep and John Pytlak also provided the same number. I also specifically remember hearing of a 70mm Titanic playing in Colorado.

I was working on the color timing of my 35mm short "Sentinels of the Twilight" at the same time "Titanic" was doing the same. I was told by my color timer Bill Mochon [DeLuxe Laboratories, Ed], that 12 70mm prints were made for US distribution and 1 additional 70mm print was made for Jim Cameron. Of course, bearing the phenomenal succes of "Titanic" in mind, I don´t know if they made any more. When I was there was during late November 1997. John O`Callaghan, Corona, CA, USA.

And this just shows how memories can play tricks with the mind. I misremembered this ad...I actually remember the copy reading "On Jupiter's moon, he is the only law." I did see it in 70mm, though, at the Festival in Fresno. Odd surround array, only three speakers, each placed in the middle of the three non-screen walls (maybe left over from the Damnation Alley Sound 360 presnation?). I remember looking behind the screen, and there were 3 full stage speakers, with two additional units featuring the bass cabinets only).

Actually, Paul, you did correctly remember the tag. "On Jupiter's moon, he's the only law" was indeed what appeared on most of Outland's big-market ads, including the Southern California ones you saw. In addition to that and the one used on the Wichita ad, some markets used: "Even in space, the ultimate enemy is still man."

I'm not sure how valid that comment is since it was recalled months after the incident. Not to mention, I find it odd the guy would say "12 70mm prints were made for US distribution" without acknowledging any prints intended for international distribution. Therefore, I conclude they either made the number he claimed plus a few more for international or that isn't what the guy actually said. Whatever the number, I tend to think about half of the print run was used here and the other half abroad.

In addition, Thomas, I find it interesting you overlooked another quote from that same page where a rep from DTS quotes a different figure and cites the same exact U.S. bookings that I did.
