I'd booked a bogstandard compact from Hertz online, but when I got to the counter at Ontario Airport was asked if I'd like a complimentary upgrade 'to something a little nicer.' Yes, please, I replied, and isn't that nice of them, I thought! Here is the behemoth I ended up with: Comfortable it certainly was: leather seats, every conceivable gadget you could imagine (the thing even had a THX sound system - in a car!) and every other driver on I-10 probably thinking that I was a complete w****r. It was when I got to fill the thing up for the first time that I realised why Hertz was so keen to offload it onto me. Yee-ikes! Ontario - Loma Linda - Hollywood and back to Loma Linda (about 200 miles total) drank $55 worth or so! That's significantly more in cash than my car costs to do the same distance back home, even with our ridiculous fuel taxes! It was fun while it lasted, but next time I think I'll say thanks but no thanks if they offer me an upgrade to what basically feels like an armoured personnel carrier...  |  IP: Logged Mike Blakesley Film God Posts: 12767 From: Forsyth, Montana Registered: Jun 99 posted 03-03-2011 09:54 PM                        Unless you bought the gas from them, I can't see any reason why it's to their advantage to get you into a fuel-guzzling car. Last year in ALBQ they tried to upgrade me to one of those and promoted it as "like driving a leather couch." I was going to the Telluride Film Festival at 9,000 Ft. through winding mountains so it was the last thing I would want so I said, "but I don't want to drive a couch". The last time I lived in the USA I also drove a Saturn. I thought I knew what my next car was going to be (another Saturn) but they are gone now. My guess is that with gas prices at near record levels (around $3.40 in the Inland Empire and $3.60 in LA when I was there), absolutely no-one wanted this 12 MPG tank and it had been sitting in Hertz's lot unused, whereas demand for superminis and compacts was high. Maybe he heard my English accent and thought that, because I'm used to paying around double that for fuel anyway, that I wouldn't mind a guzzler. Anyway, I guess it says something about how insane the fuel duty is here that in terms of cash spent per mile, a Lincoln Navigator in southern California and a Ford Fiesta in Yorkshire cost around the same in fuel. This thing is a BARGE. A big white four-wheel drive barge with leather seating, I tell you. It's surprisingly easy to park.
