The belt broke and caused the engine to get AFU. The turbo was making lots of noise for the last two years too. It was a nice car but I won't have another. I took my Porsche in for an oil change, and they warned me that it was time for the timing belt to be changed. About a thousand dollars later I was lubed, oiled and timed. I think they had to dismantle the engine to get to the belt quote: Sam Graham FREAKING TAHOE Sam, this was my last vehicle. It is basically the same as the Tahoe, but with Cadillac emblems and extra perks. The only options it had were cruise control, air conditioning, and an automatic transmission (which I hated). It was my first car that I got when I was 16, and it was a great car. I got it with about 110K, and last month it was just passed 178K. 120HP 4 banger that did an okay job, it was a good mix of power and gas mileage (usually would get 28 in the city, 32 on the freeway (75mph), and 40 on the highway (60mph)). ...but in January, when I was driving back up to college, I got hit head on and totaled the car. I was driving 50mph, just about to slow down for a curve coming up in the road, when a 19 year old girl talking on her cell phone doing 60mph came around the curve from the opposite direction. She lost control, came into my lane backwards and hit me, then spun back around into the lane and hit an Explorer. Pictures of the cars (minus the Explorer) can be found here. I didn't see anything in the rules about linking to photo albums, only to articles... so if this is an issue, please just let me know and I'll resize the photos to allow them to be uploaded here. For a replacement, I'm hoping to get a 02-03 Ford Ranger FX4 (manual transmission, manual transfer case) or an 05-06 Saab 9-2X Aero. My brother borrowed it last weekend to take his kids to Indy, about 500 miles round trip. I had it serviced before he left at my mechanics shop right up the street. No problems, drove fine. My brother used it to pick up his kids the other day from school across town. He called me and said that the engine started smoking and he stopped to put in coolant. He was only a few miles away and I just told him to drive it back and I would look at it, and to keep an eye on the temp gauge. When I looked at it, I filled the radiator but when it got half full, it started leaking from the back of the engine. Ends up there was a hose from the top of the engine that broke and was spewing out oil all over the engine. As far as the coolant, there is a "nipple" (yes I said nipple) that is on the back of the engine block that is broke and leaking coolant. My mechanic won't work on it because he isn't familiar enough with foreign cars and suggested the dealership or a local foreign shop where I used to get my work done on past cars. Until I get an estimate, I'm not sure what is happening. The car is paid off and last time I looked I think it booked for a few thousand. The hose at the top of your engine is just the cylinder head ventilation, and it leads into the intake. It's not a huge problem, but it does make everything dirty, and especially greasy. Those hoses just deteriorate over time. But the coolant "nipple" I'm assuming is your coolant temp sensor, and should be an easy fix. The reason your car exploded with coolant, is because if there is a leak in the coolant system, the antifreeze/H2O will boil (The high pressure in the coolant system keeps this from happening, and when there is a leak, that pressure is relieved, and you end up in a cloud of steam.) I really don't get mechanics that say they aren't familiar with imported cars (especially German cars) all the systems work on the same principles. www.rockauto.com has every part you will ever need, and for a lot less than a shop or the stealership will charge. and Tom, way to plug Toyota again. You must really like them. EDIT: My engine temp sensor is at the rear of the engine (audi) But after looking at my buddy's E46 I think you may be referring to the hose connection for your expansion tank. I have had guys who said things like that when I asked them to work on my Mazda. I just ask them if they could do the same job on a Ford Probe. Every one of them says, "Of course!" That's when I pull out the repair manual and show them that it says, "Mazda 626 - Mazda MX-6 - Ford Probe" on the front cover. Under the hood, the three cars are nearly identical but for the different options which may or may not have been offered on one model or the other. (Those differences are all described in the book.) They are all three the same damned car. The only differences are the body styling and options. If I get too much static from the guy that will usually be the last time I take the car back there again. My brother in law found a '77 on craigslist about a thousand miles from here and I thought he was going to wet himself, he was so excited to get it. Personally I'd rather have another '77 1/2 302 Mustang Cobra -- I had one and it was a blast to drive. I think the popularity of the 77 Trans Am was boosted by Smokey and the Bandit.
