ETS just circuited a print of "Hero" to me that played at the BRIDGE CINEMA DELUX IN PHILADELPHIA, PA.
When they tore down the print, to be returned it had some single sided splices. (Thats fine, I have no problems with that) And some where they used, used masking tape to hold some of the heads and tails of the feature instead of making a splice. And 4 out of 6 reels were not taped down for shipping.

So if I taped (masking tape) the head and tail onto the print when breaking it down, then secure it masking tape, I'm bad? This one I don't understand...Why splice??

Todd, there are 37 pages in this thread detailing why you need to splice it. If you read them you will understand, if you dont start then you just dont care and should not be anywhere near a booth.

Well, thats over-reacting a bit. I agree with a lot of whats said here, but I simply dont see a big benefit in splicing them. Please dont tell me to go over the forum again and read..I've read, its cool, however, I dont see it..I just dont. Sorry.

I dont think it is over reacting at all. If I catch someone in my booth not splicing they will at the very least be pulled from booth, if not fired.

I stand by my previous statement and I am sure most others here do as well.

Thats fine...do it anyway you see fit. Until something happens where I can say, "Damn, I should have spliced that", I'll continue to tape it. I need to see benefit in order to facilitate change.

Todd, if you were to receive a used print, with the heads and tails all over the place in the cans, you will be saying "Damn, I wished they would have spliced this." Or at least use artists tape.

Splicing the leaders back on is like putting mayonaise on french fries. It makes sense, Mon ami! [Wink]

Seriously, now... It's what you're paid to do: Send the film back the way you got it. (Or better, if possible.) Anything less is just plain laziness. Any excuses to the contrary are just that... Empty excuses.

All of my students are taught to resplice leaders when they break down. Not one of them questions the practice. Most of them will start out splicing both sides of the film, just the way they are taught when building. When they are told to only do one side they breathe a little sigh of relief. Then, when they are told the reasons why, you can actually see the little light flash on above their heads. From there on out, I have NO trouble with people breaking down movies. It's just the way they are taught.

Might I suppose that you were taught not to splice the leaders back on when you first learned to handle film? May I suggest you reexamine that practice, or lack thereof?

I was taught to use tape...if tape is good enough to hold the leader on the reel, why isnt good enough to hold the tail to the film?? Same tape.

Wow, what a surprise. I drop in to read one thread and I find people giving others an unnecessarily hard time when it would be just as quick to explain why. Telling someone to read 37 pages for something so simple is pretty lame in my opinion, no matter how many times it's been discussed. If you don't feel like taking the time to explain it again, why not point them (via a link to a particlar POST, not thread) to the info, rather than bitching them out.

NOT splicing the leaders back on more often than not causes the leader to be misaligned to the rest of the reel (or simply not secure enough) which WILL lead to the end of that reel (which is shown) being damaged -- often in more way than one (scratches, folded sprockets, etc).

By splicing the leader back on you ensure that the leader is aligned, preventing the reel from damage from the reel flanges, and is also secure.

Even if you believe that you can align the reel properly, tape isn't going to secure anything for any significant amount of time. That's why I've always been in favour of reel bands, and of course, not letting idiots that can't figure out reel bands touch them (or any of my equipment).

Todd,

You are new and clearly someone deserving of being outed as a bad film handler. Go to page 1 of this very thread and read my posts. There you will see pictures of WHY you shouldn't use masking tape (despite what the idiot who trained you says) and you can see some of that damage that happens.

The reason everyone is so angry at you is because you are NOT reading. You are skimming and/or don't care enough about your presentation to be doing your job professionally. It gets really annoying having to go dig up old posts just because you don't feel like doing a search yourself, or worse yet, having to re-compose an explanation for you. Go back and start reading from page 1 of this thread. If by page 37 you still don't get it, you never will and you should excuse yourself from a projection booth.

Well, Daryl gave me the best explanation and I can see his point. Taping the tail to the film can cause it to bent or fold the sprokets over...The light goes on!! I see the point. Thank you Daryl for explaining that. As to everyone who took the time to call me stupid for "just not knowing" and saying I should be "thrown from the booth" well, all I can say is screw you. No one is born with this knowledge and I assumed this is where you come for help. I'm not going to read post (some of which go back 4 years) in every forum about everything. Sorry, I dont have that kind of time. I guess what I'm saying is, if you have the time to get mad and post a nasty note to me...don't, because it doesnt help anything..except maybe your ego. I don't know it all...but I'm trying to learn. Explantions as to WHY something should be done a certain way does wonders. Brad, I saw the picture posted first in this forum, are you saying that definately that was done because of masking tape? Come on...I doubt it. I have loose reels that werent able to keep the film wound to an even level.. You seem to get a nasty with people sometimes, but its your website, your forum, do as you please....It doesnt do much for the new projectionist interested in a new career. Its a very intimidating atmosphere to be in. I'll go back to reading and keep my questions to myself. If only I were born a film god like a lot of you apparently were...heh.

Yes Todd, back on page 1 of this thread as I told you is a picture of what happens to the edges of the film when they are masking taped together. "Loose reels" has nothing to do with a proper breakdown. I'll bet damn near anything you have one of those shitty platters where you have to pull the motor away from the platter deck during breakdown to let the platter spin free. THAT is your problem. If the breakdown wind is solid and tight (such as from a Christie AW3 or SPECO platter), loose reels or no reels makes no difference. Follow this link. Be sure and download at least that third video on that page as well.

Please take a week off from posting on the forums so you will "have that time" to read some of the older posts. During that time do some searches. As a newbie, EVERYTHING you are going to be asking over the next few months has already been answered and documented. The search engine is your friend. Let it be your friend. Regardless, lose the attitude, because it is not everyone's responsibility to be at your beck and call for answers without effort on your part.

I thought thats what this forum was for. Help. My mistake. It seems more and more like a members only club. I dont have any kind of attitude, I just dont appreciated being talked to like some..not many..but some of the members here choose to talk to me (and others). As I said, I will solve that problem myself ny not posting anymore questions. If that were to keep up, you'd have 5 or 6 people here who know it all and couldnt be told anything. I'm not hear to do anything but learn. As far as reading through a bunch of old old posts, no thanks. I've tried the search engine..it works..to a point.

Sorry if my ignorance offended anyone.
