I called TES this past weekend to get a shattered black reel replaced (the type without the metal core). For my trouble, they sent me an incorrectly assembed clear reel.

How thoughtful! [Roll Eyes]

Do you think that studios/depots purposely send out the worst prints in inventory for the kiddie matinees? This would make sense, given that *most* theaters that do these often build up, break down, and tote it to the next theater in the chain every week, they only run one or two shows for free, and some places even interlock through equipment not set-up for it. I don't think I ever got a "good" print when I did these for Regal.

OTOH, the theater I'm currently at did a paid screening of Daddy Day Care recently (group rentals) and we got a PRISTINE print!! Leaders were all spliced back properly, the print was spotless, no cues anywhere, and even the attached trailer for Radio was still there, unharmed. The cartoon that originally came with first-run showings was gone, however, and the sticker crossed out on the box.

Daryl, it was scotch tape, not splice tape [Frown]

and while I'm at it, Dr. Dolittle 2-print #2286 had at least two theaters use that god awful white splice tape that you can peel off, only to leave nearly all the residue on the heads and tails. Trying to clean those up was always a waste of a frame, it just couldn't be lifted off [Mad] Do the booths that use this tape know how much of a bitch it is to remove it? They must be cheap theaters that never replace trailers, or they move the prints out of their theater within a couple weeks...

I still think it would be funny to have FT'ers picket the maker of that crap.

I'm leaving out the name of the distributor because it's certainly not their fault but rather their contract film handler. ETS delivers the prints but I don't know who tacks on the logos and trailers.

They reminded me to double check that this was done correctly. My emailed reply:

quote:
Ah, thanks for reminding me. I needed a laugh.

So....let's see...you ordered a trailer and a (company) logo attached, yes? And you asked them to please splice it in frame this time, yes? With correct soundtrack and head/tail orientation, yes?

Well, they got all those things correct.

Unfortunately you didn't tell them they must first detach the existing countdown leader (and ARRI KOPIERWERK lab logo) first, then reattach it BEFORE the trailer!

Assuming of course this is not part of the presentation.

If any consolation the countdown would come up in frame after the (company) logo.

LMAO in Chicago,

Steve

Carmike "Bellforge 10" Hickory Hollow / Nashville, Tennessee....... you SUCK!!

My "Bourne Supremacy" print # 00988 came circuited directly from your theatre to mine, and arrived via courier at 1:37 a.m. on Thursday night/Friday morning.

Upon getting ready to build this print... I realized that NONE of the heads and tails matched. I finally figured out what they did. Started breaking down the print... filled the first reel until it was full, then cut the film at mid-frame wherever it happened to be. Not at the end of the reel, but wherever the reel got full!! ID frames on heads and tails were completely useless.. although they were taped on with masking tape! Also, sprocket hole damage to reels 2, 4 & 5. Emulsion side scatches on reel 4 lasted for almost 2 minutes. When magnified to the size of a drive-in screen, they looked like lightning bolts running thru the picture.

Techicolor flew in a pristine print via Delta Airlines Saturday morning and they picked up the damaged print for inspection via request by Universal. I hope they charge you guys for the entire freakin' print!

I dont know if its already been said, but the projectionist doesnt always run the set. Around where I live there isn not one theater where the booth is run solely by qualified film handelers. Its true that there are capable managers and projectionists, but componies are to quick to hire a manager with no booth experience and expect him to learn the ways of a booth in one week. A projectionist should not be tagged bad just because he couldnt fix a green scratch cause by a misthread from an incompatent manager. ive inspected prints afer ive build them and ive come in after a manager running one set and theres already a nice scratch on it because they didnt take the time to check if the film was threaded correctly.

I'd bet that 95 % of the scratches, breaks and mauled up film could be accounted for by the competent person at that theater. If recieving a poor print is such a problem do something to change it. Push theater owners to hire more projectionists, or at least give management more training (granted some ppl just dont get it no matter how much training u give them). i havent taken the time to read throught all 50 something pages on this post, but I've seen enough to know that alot of ppl are here just to complain.

If a theater is using managers in booth then they are the film handlers for that theater, therefore saying that they suck is still true. It is more of the theater manager and company. If the manager actually cares about the presentation then it will "trickle" down to everyone in the theater. The problem is that a lot of people don't care, projectionist or managers. They also tend to drive away the people that do care because they get tired of being [bs] on.

Just like you are complaining about us complaining in a thread that was ment for us to put complaints into.

It is my experience over the years that tels me that if everyone is trained properly and cares there will 99% of the time be no problems. Soon as someone comes in that doesn't care and lacks the know how that percentage drops. Soon as that happens all the problems start reflecting on the most experienced person in the booth.

That's what is being done here. We are doing everything short of calling the theater and telling the projectionist ourselves. Everyone who is "complaining" here is letting the people who dont care know how much they are affecting other peoples job performance. I assume that you have either never received a trashed print, or you have, and you just look at the scratched/damaged/ruined print and just smile and put it on screen as is, with no complaints. Which is it?

I actually tried to do that. I was so pissed off, I picked up the phone and tried to call the other theatre to ask them WTF they did to this print and how was I susposed to get it put together and on the screen. All I could reach was their automated recording.

Adam stated above that we all just like to complain. When you work for a big national chain, you might not care as much when someone complains about a poor or sloppy presentation. In my case, I build the prints, run the booth, sign the checks, pay the bills, mow the grass, clean the toilets, flip the burgers, and pick up the trash on the lot at 1:30 a.m. .... everything that happens at my theatre I take personally.

The Bell Forge theatre you mention is a fairly old theatre (opened June 3, 1983 as the Bell Forge 6 by Martin Theatres and became a 10-plex on December 18, 1987). Carmike tends to neglect their older theatres, so I wouldn't be surprised to see sloppy projection or sloppy film handling done there.

In response to Jermey I have recieved trash prints, hell prints have been trashed in the theater I work in, but my gm doesn't let me order a replacement reel unless its royaly screwed or it was recieved messed up.
Example: We had a print of harry potter. Its a pretty good sized film. Well one wed. it got tossed, and whats waiting for me on thursday? Thats right the last 30-40 min of harry potter sitting in 4 separate pieces. 1 was the film that was already on the platter. 2 was in a box with nothing telling me where in the filit belonged. 3 was in a neat pile on the floor. and 4 was in the trash. well my 1st question for my gm when he came in was in regards to part No.4 in the trash. His response was it was just the credits and it doesnt matter. It didnt take me to long to paste back together, but there was no need for it to be cut up in that way let alone end up on the floor in the 1st place. and in case ur wondering y it was on the floor it was because they were running it in manual bypassing the automation, probaby because they didnt check the failsafe arms and one of them wasnt engaged. hehe sorry i was doing a bit of ranting there. the example part of it comes in when i ordered a new reel for it because a good 4 ft were mauled and there were countless scratches and broken sproket holes. I then recieved a call from our coporiate office wondering y i needed a new reel, i told him y and then he hung up. when my gm came in later that day i got bitched at cause he got bitched at for haveing to get a new reel. In my opinion i made the right call. There was enough damage to the print to order a new reel, but aparently i was wrong.

ive seen films mauled, scratched, and filthy, but they wont let me do anything about it. I cant even get a film cleaner, because it costs to much. They dont mind teh fact that when the managers work they wont even pick up a paint brush to wipe away the dust.

This is theraputic. [Smile] thanks for letting me get that out
