(AKA: Outing bad film handlers) Emma Tomiak Expert Film Handler Posts: 238 From: Carrollton, TX, USA Registered: Aug 2003 posted 07-25-2004 10:57 PM                        Wolff, I hope I'm not sent the Care Bears 2 print that you sent back! Our theatre's Summer Family Film Festival shows a lot of kids movies from the 1980s-90s, the vast majority of which are in horrible condition. Care Bears 2 is next week's film. I should have taken photos of some of the damage done to these prints. Dirty, dusty, scratched up, masking tape over splices over more masking tape, tears, cuts, folds, you name it. What really upsets me, though, is that most of these prints have been run through several of my chain's theatres for the festival running all over the U.S. I know that the damage didn't all occur in one theatre, but other projectionists should at least try to fix a little of the damage. If each theatre did ONE thing to improve the quality of each kids print they recieved, I wouldn't even be typing this post. I just wish more people cared! I even get discouraged by my booth co-workers for making such efforts. I've done my best to fix these prints up, and it's hard to keep making myself do it. Older movies for the kid shows. The worst one I saw was a few weeks ago. The Adventures of Milo and Otis. There were random splices here and there with clear tape (maybe a dropped print?) and it was FILTHY. By far the dirtiest print I have ever seen. Plus, I really enjoyed the base scratch that ran through the ENTIRE PRINT. Somebody put another set of 3 foot-long marking tape sections at each tail At least some one peeled it off, yet didn't clean off the residue Seriously... finish the job! A lot of green scratches at each tail... otherwise viewable... We had the same print last week for the children's film series and when i cracked open the case, the tail of R4 was completly ripped off, there were no heads on any of the reels, the first couple layers of R3 was folded over, underneath between the film and the reel, it was horrible, also where they spliced the tails back on, there would be two or three splices in a foot long stretch or film. To top it all off, it was the first build up I ever soloed at. After it left us, it went to another theater in our chain about 15 miles down the road. So that print was your first? What a nice way to start. Correct the problems, and if you know who had "Film Done Wrong", POLITELY and PRIVATELY let the other projectionist know if something can be improved in the way they handle film. "Film Done Right" means working together to improve. Of course it has been driven all over 4-counties now. But it's also true that we should not speak in certainties unless we really are certain about something. Otherwise just describe the condition and where the print appears to have last played. Today's gripe: My print of "The Stander" --I've already forgottten the number but I think perhaps #2-- leaders hung on with scraps of the old splice tape, several flopped and worst of all because it's permanently damaged the print, they made new cuts 2 frames further into the reels from the cuts made by the original builder who did single ID frames. Carl: leaders notwithstanding (the jostling of several moves and the ambient temperatures of that week probably had something as to why the leaders came undone, YMMV...), that print left me in better condition than it was when I received it.
