WAHHHH! (okey, my turn to whine..lol) I received a print today of "What the Bleep..." movie. One reel was wound tails out and was just cut anywhere to fill the reel for breakdown, whereas I found the splice 100 feet into the next reel.
Plus, the print was DIRTY, DIRTY, DIRTY! Got a clean rag, dampened the rag with FG, and slowly hand cleaned that print over the Kelmar bench, and that was with each reel (and of course, I used gloves, being the rag was a bit soaked with FG..).
When I got finished wiping that print down, looked pretty clean for sure (we don't have Kelmar media cleaners..)

Just back from the Sarasota Film Festival and although I did not work it, I had to endure it. All the films I saw were held in Regal's Hollywood 20, Main Street Sarasota FL. Evidently the festival people relied Regal for their projection "expertise." Evidently, someone at the Festival made a big mistake doing that.
Rather than comment on individual problems with individual tiles, I think it is fare to out the operation in general. Let me put it this way....instead of the festival volunteer saying to each and every person as they tore tickets, "Enjoy the show," it would have been more accurate for them to say, "Enjoy the DIRT."
On almost every print there was dirt....LOTS of it. Did prints come that way? Possibly; I have no way of telling (although the age of these titles are mostly only a year or two old), but whether a print comes with dirt is beside the point. To allow the horrific black rain at reel joins to remain on the print in my mind is worthy of a big YOU SUCK shout out to what purports to be a prestigious film festival.
With all the known methods of film cleaning, to just sit back and say, "Hey, that's the way the print came in." seems less than professional. Other things that happened were not nearly so distracting (seeing a turret change with the image zooming across the proscenium, masking going back and forth two times trying to find the right stop, sound distortion problems, etc.). These were momentary distractions but paled in comparison when compared to the down right filth that plagued most of the prints. Two prints actually had red grease pencil diagonals slashed across the entire frames even though regular lab cues were plainly visible and in the same frames. How much time does it take to wet a cloth with film cleaner and wipe grease pencil marks off four frames? It's just sloppy; and for Regal to claim to be the major sponsor and be announced as such at every screening and be listed in all the literature tells me that they weren't just an uninvolved landlord renting out their cinemas on the cheap. This should have been as major event for them and if this is the best they could come up with, I pity the fool that goes to that venue to see "regular" movies.
Regal....you should be ashamed for being responsible for those dirty presentations.
