If I receive a print for opening day that has been in a theatre for a press screening that has masking tape and opaque or zebra tape, I refuse it. Ask Technicolor why print 64 of The Pacifier went right back to them.
Is this true, or just poorly worded? Did you actually reject the print because the heads and tails were masking taped back on rather than spliced on? If that was your only reason, that's pretty shitty.

Now do NOT get me wrong, I have no use for such pathetic projectionists who use masking tape during a breakdown to reattach leaders, but to have a company ship you an entirely different replacement print at mega $$$ to get it there in a couple of hours is bullshit. Take a look at their operation and try to imagine what it takes to get 20,000 prints out all across the country in a week's time. You can get an idea here.

So I ask again for clarity, was the print actually damaged, or was there just masking tape on it?

I always thought it would be interesting to work there... I couldn't be an inspector though... I get motion sickness moving my eyes back and forth trying to see every frame if I don't go real slow. I'm sure I'd be too slow to meet quotas lol.

I just ran print #90 (on the cans, but #209 was listed on the reels) of 'Sahara' with the leaders just taped on and scrunched up around the reels. There was a scratch for about 10 min into R1, and lots of dirt around the beginning/end of reels. The previous address was listed as a Hoyt's in Mass, but I don't know for a fact they had it prior, so I won't name the exact theater.

I agree with Brad though; you can't reject a print for 'leaders just taped on' only.

I have to add myself to this list now. On Friday, I was tearing down Diary of a Mad Black Woman. I couldn't find the splice on reel 3. Being only 20 mins to our first show on that platter, I cut when the reel was full and finished the teardown.

Needless to say, I did fix it yesterday. I rewound reel 3 till I found the proper splice and reattatched it with clear tape.

why didn't you just tear it down on two 6000's? And were there two other prints on that platter?

There were two other prints on the platter. My DM took away the 6000's fro fear that they were old and a little bent and they would damage the film

Sometimes, you do have to do things you'd rather not in a pinch. It's good that the DM took away the damaged 6000 ft reels. But why didn't he get you new ones?

Indeed, when he took those away he had the right idea, but without replacing them he has now forced you to build straight from the shipping reels to the platter, which is a major no-no in any professional booth.

Brad,
That wasn't the only reason I sent it back. They cut multiple frames off the end of each reel for id. Some of the reels weren't wound properly causing some damage to soundtrack areas. The masking tape was really caked on as though the print was in a very hot area for awhile. It covered 3-5 frames at each tail. There were some visible scratches and fingerprints at the ends also. I realize I did say that was the reason, but I should have said it was one of the reasons. I talked to Technicolor in great detail over this print's condition and they agreed with me and said that as a first run theatre I should have received a new print. My gripe has never been with Technicolor as they have always helped us out. I know they deal with thousands of prints and I was in no way aggrevated with them over this. I'm more angry with the people that handle film in this matter. If this print had come to me as a subrun, replacement, or anything other than a full-priced admission release, I would have kept it and did what I could with it. I was merely making my point with Technicolor that theatres ought to be held accountable for the way they handle prints. Every theatre should have gotten Steve Kraus's and your memo regarding teardown and build-up procedures. They are not hard to follow...

This past week after a few days off I returned to work in the booth and saw black marks on the carpet. Two Heat/air conditioning ducts were dented. There was scrapes on the doors connecting our two booths. There was also scrapes on my locker. We have a pretty spacious booth. Six theaters all in a row. Then a couple of nights ago I went into to booth and found out what had done the damage. There was a BMX bicycle next to a projector. I about [bs] ! These guys I'm working with, young punks, were racing BMX Bikes through the booth. It amazes me how someone can be so irresponsible with the trust they were given.

Bikes definately don't belong in the booth... Do what you do with anything else that is not needed in the booth - compact it...

You can't get people to work for minimum wage and get them to respect anything. These guys are friends with the Assistant manager and the Assistant has the owner believing these guys have the theaters best interest in mind. The owner is clueless to how these guys including the Assistant really are when he isn't around. I'm overwhelmed with idiots! I get the porn out of the booth. I and a tech get equipment running halfway decent. I get the dart boards and the ping pong table out of the booth. I clean up what looks like ten years of junk. I'm at my wits end.

First off, I admit that I am having a hard time trying to understand what seems to be this current prevailing mindset: someone accepts a job at a given rate of pay; so how do they then get decide later down the line that the amount which they AGREED to work for when the accepted the job isn't what they are worth, hence they get to do a shitty job? Seems to me if I agree to do a job at a given rate of pay, then I don't get to decide unilaterally, that I don;t like the agreement and somehow I now have the right to do that job half-assed.

If someone thinks that his pay rate isn't adaquate for the job he's agreed to do, then he should either renegotiate the salary, or GO SOMEWHERE ELSE where they will pay what he thinks his pimply sorry ass is worth.

Even if we all agree that the owner should have his pubic hairs pulled out one at a time for trying to run the booth with untrained, minimum wage idiots with the IQs of cucumbers, it doesn't give them license to do a shoddy job, especially to carry on in a way that can cause damage to someone else's property.

The problem here is what you said, Tracy. The owner is clueless. And you really should clue him in. I can't believe that an owner would just shrug his shoulders and look away if you were to report the damage to him; tell him that the damage was happening to his equipement because people are racing bikes in his booth or that the booth is being used for porn parties at night or for playing darts and ping-pong.

Is it difficult to rat out your idiot coworkers? -- sure, but you know what, there is an obligation to let the guy who pays your salary know that his booth is being trashed. And mark my words....if you DON'T say anything, sooner or later these fools are going to do something REALLY stupid that will cause some major damage, and given what we already know of how ethically challenged they are, you can be sure they will implicate YOU in any future investigation of why things have gotten so out of hand. At the very least, your employer would have the right to ask you why you never came forward to let him know these half-wits were causing equipment damage.

The quality and type of people that accept the job in the first place have the predisposition to not care. Someone that considers it a job will not care. Someone that considers it a profession and takes pride in the work takes time to do things right. Young people in the work place are less mature today in years past.

"Young people in the work place are less mature today in years past."

I tend not to think that. I feel young people are, well, young, and will act how they are shown. I've seen kids who didn't care that much for a job still do well because the manager had a well-tested training procedure and kept a good eye on the entire staff.
