To whoever sent us our print of Sixteen Years of Alcohol, or whoever broke it down, clearly sufered from some sort of retardation. Reels 1-4 were heads out, as usual. Reel 5 was tails out. Reel 6 was labelled heads out, but was in fact tails out.

Now in some cases if a print comes from a theatre running 6000 foot reel changes you may encounter half the film heads and half tails because the last showing may not have had anyone show up so they didn't run the 2nd reel and broke it down causing those last two or thee reels to be tails out. Not sure if that was the case in you're situation since with a 6 reel movie you would get three reels heads three reels tails in the above scenario.

Darryl's explanation is probably correct, but it's still really sloppy to return a print with the reels oriented differently. Would it really kill anyone to have to rewind two reels before shipping the print out?

This will make me seem like an insensitive prick, but...

There's a lot of finger-pointing and name-calling going on here, so I'd like to know...

Are YOU doing film right?

Or do YOU suck, too?

Extend an open-house invitation (in this thread) and your theatre could be the subject of a blind inspection the next time this Film-Techer is in your area!

(Summer's coming and I could use a hobby... Maybe I'll drive cross-country from L.A. to Florida...)

Findings will be posted online.

Go on.

I dare you.

So your above name calling and finger pointing...pooh head:cool:

I like the idea, it would help having tech-ers in the booth giving tips and talking trash.

Bring it on

So who shows up at Frisbie's theatre and when? I wanna be there. For one just to meet n greet, and two take notes on the particular equipment pieces that I've always had questions about but didn't even know how to explain the question. lol.

We received a print last weekend and all start/ends of reels had previously been spliced with opaque white splicing tape - yes completely opaque! This meant that more or less two frames were totally obscured at every reel start/finish. Why on earth would anybody do that and not realise that 'black' frames would be obvious? I've never seen this before, in fact I've never seen this tape before.
Anybody else seen this stuff? I presume it's white for marking purposes on non-projected parts of the film.
EDIT:
Sorry, just read some other postings and looks like everyone has seen white splicing tape except me!

being this white stuff that is completely opaque is prob the pre-punched from of splicing tape that is much thicker than the regular mylar based tape.

Actually, the clear verions of this pre punched tape is actually pretty good, for it really holds film together being so sturdy, but does it rattle through the gate where it's more stiff than the mylar! ..... - Monte

I don't know who had my print of Sahara, but the print no. is 1982. If you're going to condense 7 reels onto six, [fu] at least include the head leader for reel one in the box. I hate splices in a print between reels let alone having six extra ones that weren't nessasary. Whoever you are, you are a big pile of donkey [bs] !!!!! [fu] [Mad] [bs] [thumbsdown]

Tonight was my night off so I go to my theater to watch Kung Fu Hustle and the Interpreter. I get interupted in the middle of the movie with a film break. The guy upstairs tonight didn't check his equipment. The platter had a jumped roller and wrapped. Then after I had to go up and fix it for him I go back into the movie and someone has a cell phone on all lit up. I go over to tell them to turn it off and find out it is a fellow employee and his girlfriend decided to play a game on her cell phone while the movie is playing.
Now when I go in tomorrow I have a movie that went off the sprockets to deal with and just hope I got everyting fixed. And I have a fellow employee that I had to shut up to work with.

....sounds like you have some serious management problems that can't keep that place under control.

True, I HOPE that you fixed that wrap, since you should have known how to fix those kind of things in the first place before you left afterwards that night.

..lotsa learning skills is needed here. - Monte

The owner micro manages everything. He doesn't allow enough time learning the booth before he turns someone loose to work by themselves. So the guys I'm working with have very little learning time and they think they know everything they need. To the owner it's bottom line Payroll and keep it down at all cost. The cost of the equipment.
Of course I fixed the wrap. It was back on screen in five or ten minutes but the film just isn't in the best condition for about two or three minutes. On Screen it looks fine but the sprockets ran in between the holes instead of in the holes for a minute. I haven't been able to decide if it is bad enough to cut out. It ran fine tonight for two shows. No screen images were damaged but the film just isn't right. I hate to have to cut out anything from a triller movie. Our owner would never order another reel to replace it.
