Well I'll also chime in here and clear this one up. It is definately not reverse scan or which way you aim the pickup at all. One of these new pickups can be looking through either the base side or at the emulsion side and you end up with far better results either way.
The improvement in fact lies in the pickup and optics that have been designed to look at and convert light modulation to an electrical signal. Here lies higher speed optics and in effect a laser cut slit of unprecidented quality. You eliminate the old slow speed optics and uneven and variances in the slit of the old slit lens. This is a big benefit and all those out there that have been suckered into high intensity bright red LED exciter replacements were hoodwinked!
Steve is correct about the LED's being expensive, however if one switches his reader on and off with the projector motor...many supplies including Kelmar and C.E. have facilities for doing this..... then LED life, and possibly power supply life, is greatly extended and at this point the LED cost is very comparable to purchasing, maintaining and tweeking a high quality exciter lamp over the same 5 year time period. Lets say that these LED's cost around 100.00 to buy and install. My experience has shown that they will easily last 5 years or longer if switched with the motor. Over this 5 years you will replace about three exciter lamps per year, or 15 lamps, perhaps even a socket in that time as well. If we just take the price of a decent exciter lamp(of which there are none in reality)say 12.00 per lamp which is about what a G.E. BXM lamp costs times 15 lamps that comes to 180.00 over the same time period. That leaves 80.00 for the tech to replace the LED and if he does this on his normal scheduled maintainance visits while doing A chains it isn't going to cost 80.00 to have it done. Normal replacement time would be about a half hour on just about any of the scanners out there, some even less time. If you replaced an exciter socket in that time frame then its clear that you are comming out ahead. Single screen and multiplex theatres would easily break even on this expense. Also over the 6 month time period in which we service hundreds of our customers there is far less drifting around of levels from those using LED's...either IR or visible, than those still running exciters.

As for digital readers the CAT 701 sucked big time but the BACP has been just fine using red LED's...I would assume the CAT 702 is also fine as it uses the BACP's technology but we pretty much stick with using all the BACP stuff these days due to its exceedingly high reliability.

Does anyone have any experience with switching LED's on and off in a changeover situation? I wonder if that is perhaps too often and might shorten the life. I've modified my Kelmar supplies so I can switch off the 120V input to the digital LED supply (which is a separate switching supply from the analog LED & pre-preamp supply) when I am not running SR•D.

Why not just switch them on and off with the motor circuit? No need for tying them to the C/O system. Another factor is how much you run per day in hours. A multiplex with 8 screens that runs 10 hours per day may increase LED life by 30% or more. The more comes from not having them lit before the daily schedule and after the run is done say if someone is making up or tearing down, etc. If they have a typical half hour or even 15 min. intermission between shows and turn em off during that time there is a big worthwhile savings. This can also be done with AC powered digital penthouses but I don't reccomend switching a white light digital penthouse on and off.

In a screening room situation I'd be more tempted to have both lit same as I would with thethe xenons but kill them in between screenings.

Yes,it would be easy to put them on the motor circuit. That would be the obvious way to do it. (I meant changeover as in it being changeover booth.) But that would kill the pre-pre-amp supply as well as the LED and even if that's not bad for the amps it creates the overwhelming likelihood of accidentally having the amps go on or off on the live machine (during prep or testing etc.) which would be very bad for the speakers.

Xenons stay lit unless I don't need one for 45 minutes to an hour. On a typical 10:00/12:15/2:30 three-in-a-row day they stay on all day.

Just throw a 120 volt relay across the motor circuit to trip the LED terminals on the supply. I do it this way to eliminate the thump which some of them very definately have.

I have all of my red LEDs switching with the projector motor...no ill side-effects to that one that I've encountered.

As to LED life...they really are a crap shoot...some seem to last FOREVER other seem to last for NEVER.

As to the cost schedule you listed Mark...I don't think so...$100 for an LED installed? Did I read that right? You'll loose your shirt at that rate doing say a Kelmar. Also, since a technician is involved, there may be minimum times, travel expenses, freight...all that stuff. The LED becomes a service item just like any other repair.

I'll give BACP high marks for making their LED assembly an easy change. CE comes in second for having their LED socketed (with a fixed socket). Kelmar opted for the floating socket. The europeans seem to like making the LED change into a chore. Kinoton has you unsolder leads just to remove the LED bracket then some delicate soldering to get the old one out and new in...no quicky job there.

If you are really particular, you will notice that the LED array is not uniform from device to device so you will need to tweek it to get the array perfectly horizontal.

As to exciter lamps...screw GE's lamps...they haven't made them well for decades. I now prefer the imports. The labor cost is included since any one capable of threading a projector is capable of changing the exciter lamp.

Actually the decent imports over that same time period add up to over the price of the G.E.'s, and then there are the ultra expensive Italian lamps and some German ones too that push the white light total farther up over 5 years time. Lets face it no matter whos BXM you buy its generally pretty poor quality and each lamp change requires them to be tweeked for max high frequency response, if you're serious about your work. Exciter lamps are just not what they used to be back in the 50's and 60's.
While I can't state exactly how much we charge for a replacement LED its not 180.00 or anyplace near that price. Yes, on service contract customers they get changed out if needed as part of the contract so there is no extra charge above what they are paying monthly. As to customers that have no contract I figure about a half hour to replace, and tweek them. Yes, Kelmars do take longer, and are more difficult, so we perhaps tack on three quarters of an hour to do that along with the other service work being done. And yes I tweek the LED's position after replacing it, they do vary and this is a must. I've never had to make a service call that I can remember for just a bad LED since they've come out. Just to upgrade from IR to visible....about an hours worth of work unless its an older C.E. unit in which they have an entire upgrade kit with new LED mount, power supply and other necessary things to go visible...that takes about 90 min. To replace a CAT701 LED is about an hour with alignment and I've probably replaced more of these LED's than any others. We have yet to have a Laser scanner fail in an Ernamann nor fade out to below Dolby level, some are almost 9 years old now!. I do remember you saying that it'll be fun to replace them though, and at that time perhaps its time to coherce Sam into making an LED scanner for them, or just do a small run of custom units in our shop, either way that'll be pricy the fist time its done.

While I don't favor the red LED's for best sound quality either, they simply are not really any more expensive to operate over any other commonly used scanning light source. The only MORE EXPENSIVE source would be new IR LED's, or LASER. Those things are extremely pricy but then I have an entire fleet of used I.R. spares anyway.

If you were to have to make a trip to properly tweek each new exciter lamp that was installed for best hf response(yes it does matter) then I'd say that exciter costs would be far, far higher than LED's cost.

So the switching supply doesn't get upset about going no load half the time? I suppose it's something I could look into; have a relay switch both LED's on and off with the motor, while retaining the kill switch that disables the digital LED entirely when not needed.

You'd almost need a storage scope to be able to capture the turn on rise or spike if there is one. On supplies such as the C.E. with the terminals that are for doing this specifically there is no detrimental effect to turning the LED's on and off.

Yes but these are Kelmars, not CE's. I'm not aware of any special switching terminals so it would require the relay interrupt the output line.

Or would it be better to short the LED's? The outputs go through a significant resistor. With most of the voltage drop in the resistor the P/S would probably barely notice a difference in current level if the LED is bypassed by a shorting relay.

Actually inside the Kelmar box I believe there are two seperate supplys. One for both LED's and one for analog preamp, but it might just be one for digital and one for analog.... can't remember exactly. You could just put a power switch on the LED power supply part of it and live happily ever after. I wouldn't lift the LED connection while the supply is on.... probably not good over the long haul for the LED's. I believe that the Kelmar supplies are voltage regulated and that the C.E is surrent regulated. While the Kelmar might hold the voltage at a constant with the LED disconnected the current avaulable to the LED might be excessive at first re-connection of the DC lead... The LED might not like that over a large number of re-connections. The other alternative is to buy a pair of new C.E. power supplies that are used on their less expensive scanners. Use that just for analog and the Kelmar just for Digital. These supplies have a shut off setup for the LED.

I've normally done my switching by switching the AC power into the LED supply, not the outputs. Merely wire the LED supply to the motor.

Good analogy - it proves my point. I don't see motorists lobbying the crude oil producers for savings: I see motorists reacting to crude oil price changes by demanding corresponding cuts at the petrol pump - but whom do they go to for this? - the service stations. Same here: if or when there is any change to release print prices to the distributors, then the theatres should go to the distributors to get the savings passed on. The labs have no control over the deal between distributor and exhibitor.

Seriously, it's not as simple as that. Lab margins are very small (as I mentioned, it's a competitive business). A reduction in wastage rate of -say -1 per cent translates into a significant improvement in the margin, but obviously has a very small impact on the cost of a print. Don't expect much to be passed on!

Of course not just for the retention of silver tracks! [Smile] I was responding to the comment that dye transfer is gone and never coming back. And yes, to have the necessary resolution the dye particles would need to be akin to the amount of dye you presently get when a color coupler molecule is activated by the developer oxidation product or however that works. Far fetched of course but not impossible. Basically it would be a ultra high rez film recorder cranking out prints from any source material that need no further processing, and, depending on the dyes, could have the quality and permanence we associate with IB. Given what can be done in microelectronics I don't doubt that a printing "head" of some sort could be created but whether it's feasible and whether such a machine could ever achieve competitive speeds I don't know.

Steve, unless I am misremembering there is one supply in that box for the analog LED and the analog pre-preamp and another separate switcher for the digital LED. I'm turning off the latter manually when not in use but if I drop the 120 to the former it's going to kill the preamp power and a mistake easily made with turning on or off a motor while the machine is live could destroy speakers.

I couldn't agree more. The fact is, your input here is the very first suggestion exhibitors have received from an authoritive source, that there just might be savings to be passed on to them. I think that with all that has been written to promote cyan tracks, if the public relations people had done what you have, some of the ill feeling may never have existed. The carrot is more powerful than the stick.

I think you have made a very good point that's certainly worth repeating Scott. The fact is, they both have to walk a difficult PR tight rope. The whole subject of cyan is very complex. It not only involves technical and financial issues but in some territories, legal as well.

Without admitting liability, Dominic has gone about as far as he dare in acceptance of the principals that
1 There may be cost savings in the production of prints with cyan tracks.
2. That any savings should be passed on through the distributor to the exhibitor.

For those who may think I've been a little hard on Dominic, let me repeat that he is an honourable man and I have very good reason to believe he also has a sense of humour. [Wink]

In closing, because I think I have made my point, let me tell you a little story about an oil company, seeing you enjoy petrol comparisons Dominic. A major oil company decided to use a different additive in their petrol a few months ago. The additive was technically fine, the only problem was, that a very small percentage of cars ( much less than 20% I would think) ran very rough. The engines coughed and spluttered so much, that owners took them to be serviced and suffered costs and inconvenience. I repeat there was nothing wrong with the petrol except that it had an incompatability problem with a very small percentage of vehicles. The result was that the OIL COMPANY had to pay out significant compensation to the owners of the affected cars. You see, we have a piece of legislation called the Goods and Services Act over here which regulates the marketable quality of goods. Where did we get our consumer law from? - Australia. Clever blokes those Aussies. [thumbsup]
