use your penis length as a guide when determining how much tape to use.
I used to do that but had to stop as we were going through so much tape. [Razz]

Why .. why .. the need of whacking off the tail lead on the last reel
Some places running double features put both features on the same platter with some intermission crap in the middle. They have to remove the tail from the last reel. I use to do this at a drive-in i was at years ago. I don't agree with it, but that's just how it goes sometimes. [Frown]

That less-than-one-inch was because of the rule of using tape in the booth...use your penis length as a guide when determining how much tape to use.
That's hilarious! Recently I ordered 10 rolls of tape but they sent like 20. How did they know? [Wink]

OK, you've described the reason they need to cut the tail leader when making up a print in a double-bill situation, but that doesn't explain why that leader isn't spliced back when the print is shipped out. The print is return with the tails reattached to all the other reels....how is it that the last reel's tail gets tossed? And how is it that the booth gorillas who do this half-ass excuse for proper film handling haven't gotten their fingers broken yet by the guys in the theatres down the line who have to deal with their sloppy handiwork. I bet Monte can handle a tire iron with the best of them.

Tape costs in my booth are unusually high. We've discovered it's because I am Italian....hehe

(Thx Frank, I can get mean in my old age ..lol) -- forgot to mention that the Feature "I.D" masking tape is on the rating section of the feature along with show end cues. Thus I'm sure these prints never made out to the "ozoner" complex..

You want to know why the last reel tail is missing? You want to know the actual truth?

Here it is and I'm not kidding...so they don't have to worry about cueing the automation...if the theatre even has one that takes cues. If you cut the tail off...when the end runs through...there is a brief white-screen and then shut down via failsafe. No horrible run-out noise...no odd crap on screen (it is mostly the noise). That is it and I'm not kidding. It may be sad, but very true.

Say it ain't so! [Frown]

But why leave it loose in the can then? You would think they would re-attach the tail with a good proper double sided splice as the next person to get the print would likely want the tail on??

Maybe Brad should develop a special "Film-Tech Tire Iron" for beating booth gorillas. (Gorillas don't tend to use much tape either do they??)

You underestimate laziness. And if they did reattach it at all, I'm sure it would be in the form of something other than splicing tape.

You'd think they could at least leave it in the can then.

I could've sworn I was quoting someone complaining about the person leaving it in the can. [Razz]

hmm, funny enough, I just put a print of "Whatever Works" on the platter and noticed it had no tail. This must be stopped!

From one of my former projectionists (and a former Carmike projectionist). Posted with permission:

This is what it's like living in City with only Carmike as an option.
I sound like the kind of guy who would shoot up a post office, or at
the very least, punch a guy for talking during The Empire Strikes
Back. Enjoy.

>From my letter to Carmike:

I wanted to let someone know that my 8/24/09 screening of Inglourious
Basterds was the absolute worst moviegoing experience I have ever had,
and I say that with no absolutely no exaggeration or hesitation. My
issues are as follows:

1. The movie was on film, not digital. It was apparent that this
theater is not accustomed presenting movies on film.
2. Once the opening digital commercials ended, the masking curtains
moved from scope to flat. The preview attached to Inglourious Basterds
and the film itself were both in scope. A quick check of the screen
would have illustrated this.
3. The attached preview began completely out of frame and not even
remotely in focus. The projector was stopped several time to fix this,
when all it took was the turning of two knobs.
4. Once the film started, two different customers had to complain
about the curtains before they were opened to widescreen. The film’s
opening credits were over before this was done.
5. Once the film started, frame and focus were never adjusted or
attended to by a projectionist. Between several of the reels, the film
went out of frame.
6. No usher checked on the auditorium during the entire film. A quick
check would have shown that not only was the film out of frame and
focus, but people in the audience were openly carrying on
conversations with each other and on cell phones, regardless of the
“shushing” from several customers including myself.
7. The usher was reading a book in the box office when I went up front
to ask for help. I had to leave the movie twice to complain about
frame and focus.
8. Had I not been waiting- literally- ten years to see this film, I
would have walked out. I plan on driving this weekend to Montgomery
and properly seeing it at Rave.
9. The most insulting part is that the theater had Friday, Saturday,
and Sunday to deal with these issues and by Monday, they clearly had
not.

Up to that point I'm thinking this must be the first show Friday afternoon. Even from a laziness standpoint, I can't see how letting it go the whole weekend was easier than dealing with all the complaints. I think I might have actually offered to go up in the projection room and fix it for them.

This is all SOP for Carmike in this area for the 24 years I've been here. Thankfully, they've been almost completely driven out.
