A customer walked out of Dial M for Murder just now, complaining that it was out of focus. Long story short - he never collected, or put on, a pair of 3-D glasses.

So on Tuesday's we have admission prices for $3.00. This is one of our big problem days for us. I had 6 people jumping theaters. This guy owns a outlet in our local mall. Well anyways, I sold this guy tickets before to angry birds. Than I went to go do a head count and I noticed he was in jungle book. So I pulled him out of the theater and I asked to see his tickets. He showed me his ticket. The only ticket he had was for the 7:00 show of angry birds and he was in a 9:00 show for jungle book. So when I saw his ticket. I asked him why he was in the theater. He told me that he bought a ticket for angry birds. I told him I see that. I asked him did you watch angry birds. He answered yes. So than I asked him where is his tickets for Jungle book. He said he didn't have any. He asked me if that was ok. I answered no because he didn't pay for tickets for that movie. I advised him that is theater hopping and which is illegal in the state of Maine. Than he told me he did it all the time in New York. He said it was legal there. I just thought to my self you stupid idiot. I told him well this is the state of Maine and it is illegal and against our policies. I told him he is more than welcome to stay but he has to purchase tickets. He goes ya ya.

What a freaking idiot.

I almost wanted to ask him. How would you like it if I went into your store and stole a product because I purchased it before. But of course in the wonderful department of customer service you can't say that type of thing.

As I do at the start of every show I walked into the auditorium and stood at the back to insure that the picture and sound are what they should be, and deal with any misbehaving customers.

And sure enough, here's a teenage girl on her cell phone.

I walked up the row behind her and tapped her on the shoulder once and told her to turn it off. She did. End of story, I thought. (Though I know that I've told this girl to turn her phone off during the show on at least one occasion before tonight.)

Two minutes later when I'm back in the lobby selling someone some popcorn, the girl's mother comes out of the auditorium. "Don't you ever touch my daughter again!"

I listened to about five seconds of that, maybe only three or four seconds, and told her to get her daughter and get out of my theatre. She was so shocked she stood there with her mouth hanging open and literally said "Blah du blah?" Obviously, that wasn't the response that she was expecting to get. [Big Grin]

After she got her daughter I gave her a refund and told her not to come back here again.

A little common sense goes a long way. The kid's breaking the clearly posted rules (and has been told before) and I tapped her on the shoulder to get her attention to tell her to quit breaking the rules. And the mother decides to give ME hell about it, even though the kid did comply with the rules after I told her?

No. Ain't gonna happen. There are only four or five people who are not allowed to come to the show here for various reasons; she just joined that select group.

I have had people that I throw out return the next day or the next week to apologize for their behaviour, though. It will be interesting to see if that happens in this case.

Last week I had a customer with what I guess was a bluetooth device. It hung around his neck with a flashing blue LED in the back. He was in the middle of the second row so everyone in the theatre could see his flashing light. He did comply when I asked him to take it off.
Although I wonder about people who don't even consider what they are doing, I wonder even more about companies that make something they should know will be obnoxious in a dark place with lots of other people.

I've had little kids here with flashing lights in the soles of their shoes.

Haven't seen that for some time, though. Maybe it's a fad that's finished.

That's something one of the local Regal managers and I have discussed over the years, when comparing our jobs and how we approach customer issues.

At his place, problems are most often dealt with by pulling passes out of the safe and given to anyone offended.

Out here, non compliant or abusive customers are shown the gate very quickly. "Pulling the weeds", as I think Barry said.

The entitlement of people nowadays is off the charts.

I had a small child (5 or 6) literally throwing popcorn at other patrons in a movie (2 years ago or so). I went into the auditorium after a complaint and witnessed it myself. The child was at the end of the row and the mother was about 6 chairs into the row (the other chairs were occupied by her other children). I kneeled down and quietly asked the little boy to stop throwing the popcorn. His mother saw me and flipped her lid. She told me that I wasn't allowed to speak to her children. When I explained to her what was going on, she told me that she doesn't give a "f" what he did, I wasn't allowed to speak to him. She then stood up and asked which "M-fer" turned her son in for throwing the popcorn. Needless to say, her and her children were immediately kicked out of the building.

As I was escorting her out she took out her cell phone and told me she was calling the police for speaking to her child and harassing her. I told her that I'd wait out front for them.

She left. I then was approached by one of my employees and told that she tried to score free tickets by stating that some of her children were under 2. The 5 year old was the youngest one.

I find myself covering many of those lights with electrical tape. I find it annoying how almost every product today needs to have indicator lights.

We had kids take those little ball snapper firework thingies (bang snap, whatever you call them).

One of them had the nerve to ask for a refund claiming that someone was causing a disturbance.

We had a guy come in with a set a ripped tickets from a week ago saying that he left his film half way through and the duty manager told him to bring his tickets back and we'd let him into another movie. It's a bit unusual since we'd normally give out a set of re-admit passes in this case, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt and let him in. One week later him comes in again with the same story. He's now doing it twice a week. Today he tries something a little different - comes out of an 11:15 movie at 12:45 claiming he needs to get home. We give out a set of passes and watch him walk right back into the auditorium so I send in security to boot him and his wife out. (she hadn't even left the screening)

I'm going to try grab a still frame from our cctv of a good close up of his face, to stick on the wall in the managers office so well know to look out for him.

Anyone else have customers running scams like this?

Sounds familiar Michael but I don't think we have had anyone come out and go back in without swapping their ticket for a different film.

We have a couple of serial complainers who will find something that they can use in order to get a complimentary ticket. One guy comes in with a giant list of codes that he can use so we now have a photo of him in the office.

Has anyone had customers come in with 30-50 tickets and asked for a refund? There was a criminal gang here last year that were targeting cinemas by booking online with stolen bank cards, then coming into the cinema to get them refunded onto their own bank card or for cash. Was quite funny seeing them come in with 50 tickets and claiming the rest of their friends couldn't make it.

Wait, isn't it illegal to refund a credit card purchase to anything but that same card? I know some places are really bad about actually doing that, but I also know those same places get surprise visits from the Secret Service because of it.

*EDIT: Oh, just noticed it's in England. Not sure what the laws are over there.
