Star City in Birmingham - West Midlands. I started as a part-time projectionist back in 1998 for a 12 screener. When the Star City complex opened in 2000 I moved there as a projectionist and have been there since. We have 25 - staduim seating - DTS, SDDS, EX. I was a projectionist for two years before moving up to manager and film booker. After getting a chance, I moved upstairs and never left. After being the First Assistant for a couple years - got my first Head projectionist job. After meeting a cool girl (married her a couple years later), and getting her a job up in the booth, I got my second head projectionist job. This opened the door for becoming a technician. Which happened about eight years later. Which lasted about a year - after which I became a company technician. This lasted for about four years. Now I'm with my second manufacture and loving it. My wife left the theatre a few years back. I also have a son (2 years) and waiting for our daughter (due in Dec.).  |  IP: Logged Daryl C. W. Been here since 1987. Also was a Radio Technician in the Marine Corps. Also have an Associates Degree in Electronic Engineering. We are still, yes still, on Carbon Arcs at our Drive-In. 13.6mm positives with a RCA Dynarc (same as Ashcraft super core lite). Our cinemas has the SPECO 270's with ORC CV2000's lamphouses. D650's w/EX & JBL speakers in all four houses. I feel that now is the time to move onto bigger, and hopefully, better things! As many are aware, I was not only Manager of Tri-Boro Cinemas but also worked full-time at my family’s Assisted Living Facility in Pawtucket, both jobs were quite a burden for me. Now, I will actually be able to enjoy more free time not only with Two-Tone but also with my family. I feel that family is an important item which never should be over-looked, and any time that can be spent with them, should be, for we never know when we will lose them forever. There are many reasons for me to be leaving Tri-Boro Cinemas. Over the last 3 months as Manager I have felt that I have done as much as possible to make Tri-Boro the best it could be, with what I had available to me, without much support from anyone on the “corporate ladder”. But without support, I feel that I have failed to even make Tri-Boro even as good as it could possibly be... Without support, even the best couldn’t survive. The other reason for leaving is my mom who continues to ask for my help in operating the family business, although it is only a small Assisted Living, some days it feels like a Million Dollar operation, with the phones ringing off the hook, and everyone looking for your time. Also, with my own house, there is always a repair to be done or grass to be mowed. In closing, I would like to say THANK YOU to everyone for helping me and showing your support to me while I was posting at FILM-TECH. You will all be missed! This is my first post on this site, so I'm sorry if I do anything wrong. By the way, I'm 58 and, in Aussie terms, an "old fart". You know - brought up on carbon arcs and 2000 foot spools. I've been visiting this site for a few years now, but it was only recently that my boss urged me to submit something (so he could pull it to bits, I suppose!) I've been "messing about in cinemas" since the tender age of 11 when I was (illegally) allowed to rewind film at a local cinema on a Saturday afternoon, and I've been hooked ever since. The machines at that cinema were Simplex (model number unknown) with Calder 10 inch mirror arcs, and a very crude manual changeover. When that cinema closed in 1958, I migrated to 16mm movies for a while, then passed my projectionist's licence exam in 1967. After that, I worked on a regular basis at another small, local cinema with Kalee 21's/President carbon arcs, as well as relieving casual work at all the other cinemas in town (5 hardtops plus 2 drive-ins over the years.) I moved into multiplex operation when the Village circuit opened a new 11 screen complex in Geelong. However, after that company started a policy of multi-skilling, I became disillusioned and left to concentrate on other means of earning a dollar or two. In January of 2004, a former Village colleague (who had also left for similar reasons) called me to say that he was now working for Reading Cinemas at their relatively new 8 screen complex in Waurn Ponds, a nearby suburb of Geelong, and asked if I would be interested in taking up some casual shifts. So here I am, doing around 2-3 7 hours shifts a week and as happy as a pig in the proverbial. I hope to join in some of the interesting, and sometimes lively debate I've been following on film handling topics. There's a hell of a lot to still learn at my age, and you guys seem to have all the answers. I'm a bit of a young one compared to most here. I've been with the company since July of 2003. I recently put in for promotion and I have reason to believe the prospects are pretty good. Chances are I'll be starting in the booth, which is the route they take with most promotions from within to allow time for the floorstaff to adjust to you being their boss. Anyways I've always been interested in seeing how other theaters are run, so I'll probably stick around for a while. Oh and I'll probably switch spellings from theatre to theater a few times a day, if not a few times a post. Me: Jarrod Cocker Position: Projectionist, Duty Manager Company: CMax Cinemas Place: Devonport, Tasmania Country: Australia I Started of in the Idustry at the Ripe old age of 15. Yes - my first Ever Job. After about a year, i was asked to join the projection team, and started upstairs doing one, 5hr shift a week, on a quite night! Apparently, its a bit rare for a 16yrs old to be running bio? Now at the age of 18 (19 in may 05), I find myself doing about 25 hours a week, as a part time employee, who is also doing his diploma in IT. Once a week im also a MOD (Manager on Duty). I have also been Running projection where i work for the last 3 months, as the regulary Techinical Manger is on long service leave.. I think thats all, If anyone wants to know anymore - just ask!
