Originally a single screen, by 1990 the stadium balcony had been converted into 2 screens, leaving the main floor pretty much as it was, except for a THX re-do. Anyway, the movie played on all 3 screens, but was 70MM in #1, 35MM Dolby SR in #2 and 35MM Dolby A in #3. Single screen theatres didn't just shut down in those economic hard times ushered in by the age of video, they went thru this sorry and quite pathetic stage of forced birth -- being sliced and diced into twins and triplexes and quads, horrid little abortions carved out of the majestic grand ladies and rarely done with enough cash or thought to actually make worthy twins or triplexes or quads that did anything other than make you cringe when you walked into them. For anyone who loved theatres, it was the kind of traumatizing thing that would make you instinctively reached over to cover children's eyes so they shouldn't have to experience such painful and prolonged death, because those poor multiplexed atrocities always died in the end anyway; slicing and dicing them into sorry multiples only keep them longer on tortured life-support, but inevitably they would succumb. Death was always in the air when you walked into them. But before they gave up the ghost, those horrible little grind houses would gave rise to the now all pervasive mantra, I HATE going to movies.. Thanks for posting that, Robert! (I have an L.A. ad for it but the copy quality is poor, like so many in my collection.) The Great Race is another one, like The Unsinkable Molly Brown, that does not appear to have played in 70mm in New York City. I also find it interesting the State Lake's run was continuous; the world premiere engagement in Los Angeles (at the Pantages) was a roadshow.  |  IP: Logged Rob Alexander Film Handler Posts: 4 From: Palm Springs, CA Registered: Mar 2011 posted 03-21-2011 03:35 PM                  Thank you to everyone on this site for posting all these fantastic 70mm ads. As a new comer here, I am a bit blown away by all the knowledge and expertise everyone has. These ads instantly bring me back to my teen years (late 1970's), waiting for the Friday(or Wednesday) LA Times Calendar ad, hoping that the movie I wanted to see was playing in 70mm at one of my favorite theaters. Back then, there was one theater in Hollywood, and usually one in Westwood that always had 70mm showings, and those are the ones i insisted we go to, even though it was a few miles further.
