Today's MIX of tungsten, IR LED and red LED readers has required the development of "High Magneta" analog tracks (magenta dye + silver) to maintain any degree of compatibility. Traditional cyan+magenta+silver tracks have more silver (i.e., potentially more quality on a white light reader), but cannot be optimized for XM distortion on a mix of reader types.

The environmental advantages are very real, not hypothetical. A half century's worth of experience shows that soundtrack application is a wasteful procedure that finally can and should be replaced.

Many positives:
*Significant reduction in use of fresh water by all labs *Elimination of caustic developer containing hydroquinone *Significant simplification of processing sequence *Reduction of waste and print make-overs *Removal of soundtrack silver from scrap color prints being landfilled *Improved picture quality (no silver blotches in picture area) *Elimination of application-caused sound problems *Ability to optimize cross-mod distortion for one type of reader
Right now, the MIX of readers is a stalemate situation. It is very unlikely that anyone with red LED analog readers will go back to the "good old days" of only tungsten analog readers, or even install infrared LED arrays (which had never caught on anyway). Since a MIX of readers will continue to require "high magenta" (magenta+silver) tracks for the best compromise for XM distortion, a return to "traditional" (cyan+magenta+silver) tracks is unlikely.
Or, the movie industry can move ahead with 100% conversion to red LED readers and cyan dye analog soundtracks, and the MANY advantages they DO offer, for EVERYONE.

Steve G., you ignorant slut (kidding). You know the EPA only regulates when it has to. Remember that Trailer volume limiting effort (TASA)? That was done to "beat the regulators to the punch." If efforts are made, forced legislation is rarely imposed. The environmental benefits are more than significant, they are Paramount, Universal, etc. There are benefits on both ends, in the labs manufacturing and in the end when the prints are destroyed.
Steve, you said that it is not a lateral move for sound quality. If you have a good (meaning you care enough about the presentation quality to not get the cheapest red light reader out there) red light reader, it will be a lateral move for the "back-up track". And if you have Digital sound (again, quality is important) the lateral move for the analog track will be something you'll read about and hopefully never really have the chance to notice.
Regarding my comment about Application leading to an 11% downgrade of reels reviewed... that means that the application splash is distracting enough for the reel to be downgraded to a "C" grade for quality, or rejected. "C" graded reels go to Cleveland or Canton or Columbus or any other mid-western city beginning with the letter "C". And rejects... I hope they don't go out, but that's a whole separate thread.
Just to be fun, I'm going to put on my NostraCostas hat and make a prediction... ready? By ShoWest, there will be at least one announcement about another 100% cyan rlease by a major studio... maybe two. And I know ShoWest is two weeks away, mind you.
Hope to see some of you at the Show. Including Steve G.... we can arm wrestle over cyan tracks.

This characteristic of the red LED reader permits the installation of these reading mechanisms in theaters before any change to cyan dye analog soundtrack technology is implemented, and thus allows for an orderly changeover from silver to silverless sound tracks.

Long LED life, up to 10,000 hours. Increased stereo separation. Wider frequency response at high power levels. Significant reduction of illumination nonuniformity distortion. Possibility of the industry moving to cyan dye tracks. Red LED illumination sources have a compelling appearance.
So widescale implementation of red LED readers was well underway BEFORE the proposal for cyan dye tracks, just as I stated. And the work was far from "threats from the cyan lobby" --- it was a proposal (technical paper presented at the SMPTE) that recognized that acceptance would require that tens of thousands of red LED readers would need to be installed based on their own merit, before any conversion of prints to cyan dye analog tracks could occur.

You are showing your "silly" bias too . There are many more aspects of print quality than signal-to-noise alone. I've already mentioned the advantage of having a single XM optimization point (i.e., less distortion) if all readers are red LED. Poor application quality can affect sound quality (skips, bubbles, weaving, incorrect width, density variation, etc. CAN be heard). Taking ALL factors into consideration, cyan dye tracks ARE as good as with applicated film. And you well know that silver in the picture area certainly CAN be seen by all. Plus all the other advantages mentioned previously regarding reduced waste and environmental benefits.

One day, there'll be a war over resources - drinkable water, oil, metals, that sort of thing.
When the bombs have all fallen, and as we are picking our way through the post-apocalyptic rubble, we'll find a roll of film - the only format of moving image that we'll be able to recognise. Of course it will have a cyan track - the supply of water (let alone silver) having finally forced the change some years previously.
After months of wandering around the ruins, we'll find what was once a theatre. The bio-box/booth will still be standing, and, inside, a 35mm projector.
I just know it will be fitted with a tungsten exciter lamp sound head, and standing by it, will be a film-tech.com member. You guys are just so-o-o resilient.
But this time, you won't be able to hear the film .
