The projectionists I worked with were so good, they would actually be considered technicians at most other chains. So, a big thumbs up to Lou, Steve, Brenda and Carlos. I had a great time working with you, and would suggest Local 110 to any theater owner desiring a first-rate operation.

John,
You really don't have a clue as to why 110 has the reputation it does.... aside from being started by organized crime way, way back. Just because you had four good operators there doesn't mean a thing. Having briefly been a part of 110 I can say that you are wrong! Back in the 80's I declined membership to 110 because I saw SO MANY incompetant operators that I did not want to be a part of what was a strictly buddy-buddy type union. Heck they had guys on lay-off but the brought me in.... go figure! I also had friends that were part of other locals that were far ahead of 110.... they were not buddy-buddy type operations, they brought in people that were inclined for the job or already experienced and they actually provided their operators with training. Seattle was one example. Today because of the 1990's GC/Cineplex lockout many of those incompetant operators are gone, back at their normal everyday jobs they were also doing at the time.... bankers, lawyers, etc. Now I could tell you about the one armed projectionist that 110 sent to a theatre I maintained at the time to run 70mm if you want to hear about it..... he was a nice guy though, someones buddy!

It may sound like I am against the IA but I'm not. Its just that over the time I have been working in this buisness I have seen more bad than good from them. For those that are part of well run locals, and perhaps Chicago has improved, I say great.... and keep up the good work!

I am getting realy tired of listening to the same complaint chicago chicago... there are thousands of IATSE members all over north america who go about there jobs in a competent and law abiding manner and they do not deserve the constant in your face attitude that seems to permiate some peoples mind set What happened there was wrong but to continually brand every other person is even more wrong

Yeah, I feel the same way about non-union manager operators. There are thousands out there that care about what they are doing and strive to give the best presentations. So we are all in the same boat here. There is always someone out there dragging us down because of stupidity and or lack of teaching in training someone. I mean come on non of us popped out of the womb perfect and capable in doing our jobs today. Someone had to help show us the way.

I would agree with Gordon. Look into ANY organization and you can find bad behavior, be it doctors, cops, or whatever. Reasonable people know there will always be a few bad apples, and not to condemn the other 99% who do an honest day's work.
What you call bad behavior the FBI called "an act of domestic terrorism using a weapon of mass destruction" Amazing... Tell me, which group of rouge cops or doctors were out pulling terrorist attacks?

Kind of like that same complaint you hear in the USA.. 9/11, 9/11.

Were the perps thown out fo the IATSE? Was the local shut down? Did the IATSE do ANYTHING to assist the victims of the attacks carried out by its members? So you claim that to distrust an organization who, from everything I have seen, stands silent at the conduct of some of its members, is more wrong than the TERRORIST acts committed by some of its members? Amazing...

Don't anyone dare put manager operators in the same category as union operators. As they may care about their work, none of them, as far as I have ever seen, have nearly enough training to run a booth correctly. The majority of the theaters in my area that have manager operators, have decreased the quality of the presentation. As a tech for the last 15 years, I have seen the difference between the two.

I pretty much agree Richard but there are a few really good manager/operators out in this area... and I mean really just a few! Perhaps one or two per state on my service runs. Most of them don't have a clue that its called a projector, or the gauge of the film they are running is 35mm. Chains really skimp here and if an operator screws up something the chain could care less as they don't want their minimum wage, no benefits employee to leave because he barely shows up on the books!

As for quality union operators it all depends on where you are as to what you get and how a particuluar local has been run over the years.... many are dismal to say the least, many are still VERY good. Those they were really great are still around. For any illegal tactics by either side those involved should be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible by law. This has to apply to both union and non-union people and theatre owners!

Hey Gord, we're still waiting for that giant list of theatre owners/operators that break the law....... so whats taking so long? This was from a post you made about two minths ago......

It is a mistake to lump M/O together either good or (usually) bad just as it is a mistake to lump union together good (usually) or bad. I have met and worked with some from each of the 4 categories. It all comes down to training, ability and attitude.

One thing though, aside from everything else, most M/O problems result from having things to deal with out of the booth whereas union usually doesn't have that hassle.

Just because one carries a card and one doesn't does not mean they don't have the same qualifications. There are bad union guys and there are good union guys. same goes for manager/operators or just plain ol opperators that are not managers and not teenage popcorn shovelers. I mean I was an opperator for many many years till I got involved in management a couple of years ago Essentially booth manager. I took my job very seriously 20 years ago and I hold the same attitude to this day. Oh I was in a position to join the union back in the 80's but it basically disappeard from cinemas in our area. But that didn't stop me from learning as much as I could to better myself at my job and to make the technicians life a bit easier by knowing how to repair something and keep the show on the screen. I just wish more people had the same attitude as I do.

I must agree Mark. I read your post that you made after I posted this one. I guess that is how I feel about the way I work. My technician asked me if I could be cloned once. Guess that sums it up.

I agree with Mike. It does come down to training, ability, and attitude. Also, where I come from, holding a card does mean we have better qualifications then non card holders. I was trained through the union. The managers out here were trained through the company they work for. They know how to thread the machines and press the start button. Anything goes wrong call the tech. Yes there are good union operators and bad ones. I never said there werent. There are also a very few managers that can run the booth well. The majority around here can not.

A lot of those M/Os are hired for other abilities and then shown projection as an aspect of their job. Here's how you cash out the box office, here's how you do inventory, here's how you thread a projector...and if they are lucky they aren't responsible for all three in the same shift. Even with good training its still just one aspect of their job.

I'm making excuses of course and partly because I lived it but the bottom line is to a certain extent M/Os are set up to fail so it shouldn't surprise people when they do. Blame the decision makers above who don't hire one person to do one job well...they don't see it as one job, they see it as one aspect of a job.

Jim: I agree with Gord. You can keep clamoring over the Chicago Iatse incidents and errantly transpose that over all IATSE locals or all labor unions for that matter but rational people will stand back and observe the bigger picture (as others have done on this thread) to note that there are good and bad workers and owners in all fields. You want "terrorism?" What happened to the people of Bhopal, India and a global conglomerate named Union Carbide? Should I rail against their batteries and carbon rods forever?? How about the thugs who Henry Ford hired to threaten and beat up his employees to keep them in line (and non-union)...I still own an F-150...incidents are addressed and you move on. Corporate "terrorism" against working people and the environment and our national resources could be construed as going on DAILY, yet I don't lump ALL corporations in the same boat! So, my point is: not all unions, union locals, and union workers are evil and bad!

The fact that it is always the CHICAGO union that is brought up on these discussions proves Justin's point.

Thats what I've been saying in my posts if you read between the lines..... I'm only bringing up 110 because I have direct experience with them.

Yes.
I am particularly curious to find out if he was a guy with just one arm or if he was the one guy armed on the job.

Justin,

As far as I am aware, the IATSE has been silent on the terrorist attacks done by members of one of its locals. In my opinon, slience is no different than tacit approval. As long as the IATSE continues its association with the Chicago union then they must also accept the association with the actions of the Chicago union. If they don't like being painted with that brush, perhaps the IATSE should sever all ties to the Chicago local.

BTW, the Union Carbide incident was caused by sabotage - another tactic employeed by the Chicago union members in their repeated harrassment of the Melrose Park theatre in the Chicago area..

Regarding M/O versus projectionist....I don't think the comments, including my own in various threads, are about the people, just the concept. That is, negative critiques are not saying the people suck as much as the concept of having the person that is responsible for all aspects of theatre operations, and customer service, should be the guy/gal in the booth on show turn arounds, or during mishaps or just distracted by any one job function period.

It is irrational to think one person can do the same job of two or more people, at the same time. Its not like the best projectionist in the world, if required, to then start managing the theatre wouldn't see his/her booth/presentation quality begin to suffer. You can come into the dual title job from either side and still end up with an inferior result.

Most people that run a booth, shouldn't...they just aren't that good either from a technical point of view or from just attitude. Anyone that has dealt with employees knows that either failing is equally a disaster.

Likewise, I've seen more bad managers than good (nothing to do with personality being bad...just were not good at "managing"...should have called their title "go through the motions" rather than "manager").

Now take those two groups and expect to have a good/great Manager/Operator? It is just isn't realistic, even if that person could clone themselves into two (or perhaps they are twins).

Other than crisis management, I see little in common between the operator's job and the manager's (neither can fall apart when the chips are down). It is a poor choice of combining jobs.

To sum it up again...the critiques on M/O are not about the people doing it, it is about the concept itself.

As to Local #110...it is easy to pick on...it is the most notorious, as is the entire city of Chicago and unions in general. However, the concept of Unions should not be associated with crime. Crime need not have a union card. Most every worthwhile worker protection that the government likes to take credit for came from organized labor, not the government...unions are not bad, just a necessary evil if you don't want a world of subsitance level wages.
