A cursory look at some theatre web sites reveals the following, for an evening show on 12/25: Somerville - $15 Coolidge - $15.25 AMC Boston Common - $18.89 (?!?) The Ritz is charging $15 a ticket, and their normal weekend evening price is $11. I don't remember much of a surcharge for Interstellar last year (maybe a dollar or two) and aside from the Ultra Panavision lenses they already had a full 70mm + DTS installation. It looks like there is a $5 surcharge for the 70mm show ($15.81 as opposed to $10.39) But their listing makes no mention at all of the 70mm presentation. What's worse, apparently there is supposed to be a "2D" DCP of the movie in the same theater. But there seems to be only one screen's worth of showtimes listed. Maybe the "2D" print is on hand as a backup if the 70mm print gets shredded in short order. Frankly I'm really surprised AMC has been able to grab so many of the 70mm bookings. I would figure various things, including a colossal failure of Interstellar in 35mm in one of their top locations, would have put them at a disadvantage. New Orleans (Harahan) and Birmingham (Hoover) among them. It also looks like that in many smaller markets the only tickets actually on sale are for "2D" with "showtimes unavailable" for 70mm. This leads me to believe the jury is still out on how many 70mm installations actually get done. If we swapped them between projectors, the problem moved with the lens. I was only there for the last reel and a half (a co-worker was projecting that show and I was working a later one), but could not see any "weaving in and out" - the image was consistently a bit soft on the #2 machine. A related issue was that we suspect that the print had been unevenly waxed: some residue came off on our finger one side only, and it ran through the projectors far more noisily than any other polyester 70mm print we've played on those projectors. I hope that is correct! It's also claiming Montgomery AL will have a 70mm print but not opening until New Year's Eve. I thought all the 70mm venues were to open by Christmas Day.
