The computer is a tool, logically no different than a hammer or a screw gun.
I have a Mac because it does the things I want to do the way I want them to be done. The computer is just a conduit through which those things get done.
I like the design of my Power Mac. I like the design of OS X. I like the way Final Cut is designed. But, when it comes down to it, I don't see those things while I'm working. I sort of see "inside" the computer. It is as if I am looking through the screen at the work I'm trying to do behind the glass.
What I don't like about a computer or particular parts of its OS is the feeling like I'm being pulled back to this side of the glass every time thing doesn't do what I want.
I'm pretty sure I don't think like most people. Most people can only see the external parts of the computer. And, I agree with you, Bobby, there is a portion of the population that sees the computer and just makes certain assumptions about it when, in reality, they haven't got a clue what they are doing.
A lot of times, we have to take material off DVDs to make ads with. I'll get kids who go through the whole process of editing a video and it comes out looking crummy when the final product viewed on the screen in 720.
People will look at me and say, "But I thought Macs were better?" I'll fire a whole string of questions at them: "What is your source video?" "Did you deinterlace it?" "What is the resolution?" "What is the aspect ratio?" "What is the frame rate?" "What CODEC did you use to compress it?"
They'll just sit there with their mouths open... "Duh, I don't know..."
People think I'm mean to them when I jump on their asses like that but, if they were at a real job, their boss would be reaming their asses out!
Yeah, people do tend to act like Macs are magic but they would be just as stupid if they used a PC.
When one of them has a problem and they ask why, my stock answer is, "Error exists between keyboard and chair!"

You know what pisses me off -or rather, "makes me go insane" (to put it more nicely)? A lot more types of people than just the Geritol-chewing crowd are loitering their vehicles when the traffic light has turned green.
Have I already griped about this? Too bad if I have. This bitch deserves an encore!
Normally I have a very easy commute, most of which takes place on I-44 skirting around downtown Lawton. That's no longer the case because a big construction project has the interchange of I-44, Cache Road and 2nd street closed until the fall of 2010. Now my daily commute takes me past Lawton's largest middle and high schools as well as lots of stop and go bullcrap in downtown Lawton down to the town's industrial south side.
This commuting path leaves lots of opportunities for assholes of all kinds to obstruct the flow of traffic. And that flow of traffic is growing much more congested, thanks largely to a massive expansion on Fort Sill that is adding 20,000 new residents to Lawton's 100,000 metro population.
Basically, when the light turns green the driver at the front of the line needs to move his ass already. I'm accustomed to certain members of Lawton's large retirement community to be a bit tentative in advancing forward through a clear intersection. I cannot get used to some chick who has her head buried up in the digital version of her asshole (her cellphone) or is yakking away to the other kids in her vehicle and being totally ignorant of the pretty light being a certain shade of green. The light doesn't get any more green than that, Lady. Freaking move already! HONK!!
Isn't it fun to have a team of slow poke idiots obstruct the way for your entire commute from the front of your workplace all the way to your own driveway? I have that pleasure now! It's like one slow poke asshole turns out of my way only so another asshole can pull in front of me to resume the task of obstructionist driving. Sometimes I wonder if there is a conspiracy of obstructionist drivers working as a team. They coordinate their slow poke driving attacks to maximum effect to waste as much of your time as possible. "No Edith, you need to park on the Rogers Lane ramp to I-44 West. We have a team of 7 drivers already obstructing Bob."
The traffic situation in my town used to be a piece of cake. Laughably easy. Now it is inspiring some of the same kind of anger I felt in certain driving adventures around Beltline Road in North Dallas. This is only Lawton! Traffic shouldn't be this difficult here!
