The Cunninghams were building a new house to accommodate their expanding family of five. Every night they would visit the new construction to check on the progress. One evening they saw that scaffolding had been erected around the perimeter of the house. Four-year-old Kayla was amazed. She whispered to her parents Anne and Rick, "Look at those monkey bars. They're bigger than the ones at school." [Big Grin]

"Happy Birthday"

My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, "68."

He was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?" [Big Grin]

My girlfriend took her five-year-old daughter shopping with her. The little girl watched her mother try on outfit after outfit, exclaiming every time, "Mommy, you look beautiful."

A woman in the next fitting room called out, "May I borrow your daughter for a moment?" [Big Grin]

One of our family's superstitions is that if a fork is dropped, we'll have a lady visitor; if a knife, a man; if a spoon, a child. One evening my five-year-old daughter was drying silverware and I had put the tray close to her on the counter. Suddenly I heard the awful crash of all the silverware hitting the floor. "Mommy!" she cried in excitement, "we're going to have a party!" [Big Grin]

Our neighbour watched with interest our first efforts at raising chickens. We wanted them to have ample space, so we penned off a large run, and also built them a small house at one end. We felt they lived quite a luxurious life.

When a heat wave struck and the birds showed signs of distress, we hastily draped a tarp over a pole to give them shade. As the chickens settled down under the tarp, our neighbor came over and exclaimed: "Oh, isn't that cute! You've let them go camping." [Smile]

A seven-year-old boy was at the center of a Dallas courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him.

The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible.

The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her.

When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out that they also beat him.

After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Dallas Cowboys, whom the boy firmly believes, are not capable of beating anyone. [Big Grin]

I've got three TVs, cable and a satellite dish; I have three phone lines into the house, a cell phone and one in the car, plus a pager. I use two computers, three ISPs and a fax machine. I subscribe to two daily papers and one weekly one. I watch the news on every channel every evening.

And my kids have the nerve to tell me I'm out of touch. [Eek!]

The Smith's were proud of their family tradition. Their ancestors had come to America on the Mayflower. They had included Senators and Wall Street wizards.

They decided to compile a family history, a legacy for their children and grandchildren. They hired a fine author. Only one problem arose - how to handle that great-uncle George, who was executed in the electric chair.

The author said he could handle the story tactfully.

The book appeared. It said "Great-uncle George occupied a chair of applied electronics at an important government institution, was attached to his position by the strongest of ties, and his death came as a great shock." [Big Grin]

While my son and I were visiting grandma, the man who delivers hot meals came. He said he had eight kids of his own.

I said, "I can't imagine dividing my love by eight."

He said, "You don't divide it, you multiply it." [Smile]

I have a reputation for penny-pinching, but I didn’t realize how I had influenced my daughter until she showed me her valentines from school. Reading the name on each card, she separated them into two piles. Then she carefully erased the pencilled signatures in the first pile and brought them to me.

"You can save these for next year, Mommy." [Big Grin]

While I was visiting a friend, his college-age daughter hurried into the room. She enthusiastically explained her plans for the afternoon and ended with a request for some pocket money. With an exaggerated sigh and roll of his eyes, my friend reached for his wallet. "Maybe you'd like a money tree out in the backyard," he grumbled, winking at me.

Kissing him on the cheek, and with a grin of her own, she replied: "Oh, no, Daddy. We'd never replace you!"

James and his four-year-old son Anthony saw a huge chicken at the petting zoo. The boy was impressed with the size of the chicken and said," He must be the daddy because he's the biggest." James agreed, adding, "Yeah, and he pecks a lot, too." As they walked away from the area, Anthony saw a little girl about his age. He pointed to the big chicken and warned, "Watch out. There's a really big pecker in there." [Big Grin]
