To take care of the rest, I have headphones and a good selection of tunes. To make it better, the inside of these cry closets should be lined with hard metal surfaces and NO padding anywhere in there so it can have Chili's acoustics and help to magnify the SCREAMING into the parent's ears so they will understand why they are bad parents to the child, and overall bad people for torturing others. Mike, if you have found a brand of "noise canceling" headphones that blocks out the noise from screaming infants, please let me know. I have not yet found them. Nature has wired us to respond to the sound of a child crys -- they can't be ignored. Survival of the species kind of thing. You can be behind someone doing 60 mph for 20 miles, with no one else around, and the minute you decide to go around them, they'll speed up!! It's like everyone wants to play freakin' NASCAR or something! If I further increase my speed, they will increase theirs by a similar margin. If you stay with them to see how far they'll go with it, they'll do as much as an extra 20 mph, just to keep you from passing them. And, if you drop back behind them, they'll slow down to their previous speed. EVERY TIME! Also, in Florida the center lane on the three lane southbound is the slow lane. The fast lane can't pass since ONE car matches the speed of the center lane. Hundreds (Thousands?) of cars snake over to the right lane to get around the slow ones. Out here everyone is wanting to be first to get to the Temple so that driving style is a way of life around here. Our expressways have four lanes... three that all go fast and one express lane far left and marked... it's hardly what I can an express lane though as they allow busses and motor homes to use it. Back in 1970, back when not only you could smoke on planes, but they would give you cigarettes with your meal, my father got his orders from the Navy to transfer from Hawaii to Washington, DC. He and mom were 35 years old at the time (just kids from my perspective now) and had SEVEN kids, of which I was the oldest at 12. The youngest just turned 1. We were on a commercial flight from Honolulu to NYC (my grandparents lived in NY). It was straight through with only a stop in SF -- none of us getting off the plane (this was in the days before hubs and deregulation, so thankfully no running from one end of the airport to the other). I think it was 13 hours. Believe me, all of us were cranky and restless, some cried, most made noise and my parents (and the stewardi) did what they could. I'm sure the people around us hated us. Still, it was all my parents could do. There was no leave-the-children-at-home option (though I was pissed about having to leave Hawaii). So yeah, they are annoying and shouldn't be brought to inappropriate places like theatres and (most) restaurants, but at least try to have a little sympathy for a mom (and dad) who have to go somewhere by plane with their kids. Then again, I've been told I don't have a heart, so maybe they're similar physiological reactions. Martin, while I find rare empathy for your story, the circumstances that you describe are fairly unusual today. Not only are the services smaller, but divorce rates among service members are high (though not as high as five years ago). Plus, an easy solution to that is to stick all the kids on a C2 performing a carrier takeoff. I think it's different, though, when you have children. Plus, I have lost a child, so that affects me in a significant way. Oh, I get annoyed, too, when I see parents allowing their children to run slip-shod in restaurants and other public places. But I don't blame the children for that - they're just little.
